HOW TO PREPARE FOR A VIRTUAL INTERVIEW
Preparing for an interview can be exhausting at times. In preparation, one needs to make proper research about the company and position applied for, try to pick out the right outfit, get to find out the interview venue in good time, etc. and this can be a bit tasking.
While this may be associated with the contemporary face to face interviews, preparing for a virtual interview may require a lot more.
A virtual interview is not so different from any other job interview. The major difference is that it is done online (using apps/software like zoom), that is video interview.
Virtual interviews are conducted same way as face-to-face interviews, here the interviewer and interviewee connect sometimes over the phone, but often using technology like video conferencing and other online platforms. Also, virtual interview saves interviewees the expense of travel and time.
A virtual interview requires a good computer with camera and audio functioning well as well as online software for video conferencing.
For a virtual interview, one should consider the following:
- Dress Well: Virtual or not, it is an interview and so you should look your best. Though a virtual interview can be done within the comfort of your home, you also should not appear looking shabby. You should dress professional as you would for a face to face interview. Remember, looking good is good business. Do not also pick a good outfit that is rumpled; make sure your outfit is well-ironed and ready before the interview time. Dressing well can boost confidence.
- Find a Good Location: Get a quiet environment for the interview. If it is in a room, it should look tidy and professional so the interviewer can focus attention on you and not what is around you. The place should be well-lit, free from distractions and have a good network reach.
- Familiarize and Check Technology: After getting a good location with a wide network reach, ensure you have reliable internet connection. Remember that we mentioned the tools required for a virtual interview, therefore, ensure the camera and audio of your computer is functioning properly. Also, ensure your camera is well positioned so the interviewer can see your face clearly. This should not be done on the day of the interview but a day before. Also, about 30 minutes before the interview time just to be sure everything is working effectively.
- Practice: Remember practice makes perfect. It is important you practice what you have to say because telling the interviewer about yourself and why you are the best for the job is your selling point. You have to practice likely questions that will be asked. Also, monitor your body language. Your composure can convey confidence. So it is advisable to sit up and look straight at the camera.
